HEAWOLRU PAVILION
From the Goryeo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty, the port of entry and departure for Jeju Island was Mokpo, Naju, Jeollanam-do (Taekchon Village near Yeongsanpo, present-day Naju), but was moved to Namchang, Yeongam (present-day Haenam) after 1433. At that time, Haewolru in Namchang Village was the place where envoys traveling to and from Jeju Island waited for the wind to board their ships. It is also the place where Sugun Manho, the commander of Dalryangjin, which was built to defend against Japanese pirate invasions, stayed, and is also the anchorage place for the navy. Namchang, where Haewolru is located, was also called Dalryang, Godaldo, Daldo, and Ijin. According to records, Haewolru was built between 1821 and 1850 and was renovated during the reign of King Sunjo. This place is a representative scenic spot in Haenam that boasts beautiful scenery, as its name suggests, because when the water fills in the evening, it looks as if there is an extra moon in the sea.
In front of Haewolru, you can see an island called Daldo, and if you follow the coastal walking path from Haewolru, you will reach Dalryangjinseong Fortress. Dalryangjin is one of several naval defense camps built around the southern coast in the early Joseon Dynasty for the purpose of responding to Japanese invasions.
